How to Improve FPS in PC Games Without Buying New Hardware

Published October 3, 2026 by GameSteller Team

Low frame rates are frustrating, but you can often gain noticeable performance with a few changes. Begin by updating your graphics drivers, since new releases frequently include optimizations for recent games.

Next, lower the settings that cost the most performance: shadows, volumetric effects, and anti-aliasing. Textures usually look fine on high as long as you have enough video memory. Using upscaling options such as DLSS, FSR or XeSS can boost FPS with little visible loss.

Close background apps like browsers and launchers, and make sure your power plan is set to high performance. Check temperatures too: a dusty case or old thermal paste can cause throttling, which quietly reduces speed during long sessions.

Finally, install games on an SSD and keep at least 15 percent of the drive free. These habits together can make a big difference without spending anything.
